But there’s one question that very few people ask themselves before buying—and it’s the one that really matters if your terrace isn’t at ground level: Can it support the weight?

What features does it need to be safely installed on a terrace?

Three, without exception: a perfectly level and flat base (with no unevenness greater than 1–2 cm), a surface that can withstand moisture and prolonged contact with water, and—the factor that truly makes a difference in safety—a deck structure designed to support the weight. On a ground-level terrace (a patio or concrete slab resting directly on the ground), this last point isn’t an issue: the weight is transferred to the ground just as it would in a garden. On an elevated terrace—such as a rooftop, an attic, above a garage, or on an upper floor—the weight is supported by the building’s structure, and there is a real limit that you cannot simply guess at.

How many kg/m² can a standard terrace support, and which one can I install?

Here are the real numbers—not a generic «ask a technician» response without explaining why. A pool filled with water weighs, per square meter, approximately 1,000 kg for every meter of depth—so an 80-cm-deep pool weighs about 800 kg/m² in water alone, not counting the structure or the people inside. Spanish building codes (CTE DB-SE-AE) specify a standard live load of 300–500 kg/m² for residential terraces and balconies, depending on the type of building and the year of construction.

Do the math: most of our swimming pools, when full, exceed that limit on a raised deck. That doesn’t mean you can’t install one at all—it means that on an elevated terrace (not at ground level), you need an architect or structural engineer to confirm the actual load-bearing capacity of your structure before you buy, not after. We do not publish a load certification because it depends entirely on the building, not the pool—it would be a promise we cannot keep in your specific case.

What are the most compact and durable pools for small patios?

For the lightest total weight and smallest footprint: the Solara (spa, Ø2m) and the Azora XS (round, Ø2m, starting at €799) are the lightest in the entire lineup when filled, as well as the ones that take up the least space. If you prefer a rectangular shape to make the most of a corner, the Marea XS (200x200 cm) serves the same purpose in a square format. Note: «more compact» reduces the total weight in kilograms, but it doesn’t change the weight per square meter—it still depends on the depth, so the calculation from the previous question applies equally to these models if your terrace is elevated.

What is the structural difference between installing on a terrace and in a garden?

In the garden, the weight is transferred directly to the ground—compacted soil can easily support the weight of any residential pool, just as it supports a shed or a gazebo. On a ground-level terrace (a patio with a concrete slab), the same thing happens: there is no intermediate structure that could give way. The real difference only arises when the terrace is elevated above a living space or a garage: there, the weight is supported by a floor slab designed for a specific load, and exceeding that load isn’t just an aesthetic issue—it’s a genuine structural safety concern.

Do you need to protect the terrace floor before setting up the terrace?

Yes, regardless of whether the patio can support the weight or not. Use a protective tarp or mat under the entire base to prevent scratches, water stains, and heat marks on light-colored tiles or wood flooring. Pay special attention to wooden flooring: prolonged contact with water and moisture can cause it to swell or warp over the course of several weeks—if your patio is made of wood, make sure it has good drainage and consider raising the base slightly using treated pallets or a grid instead of placing items directly on the wood. And make sure the patio drain can handle splash water and allow for a complete drain at the end of the season.

If your patio is at ground level, you can follow the same installation process as for a garden—it's explained step by step in How to Set Up a Portable Pool in 20 Minutes.
