I’d been buying above-ground pools for years. First, a tubular one: it took hours to set up, the poles didn’t fit together properly, and the liner started to deteriorate before the end of the second season. Then I tried a steel one with a liner—more durable, yes, but I had to pour a concrete foundation, coordinate several people to set it up, and accept that it would be permanently fixed in the yard. The day I wanted to move it, I realized it was impossible.

The third summer with problems was the last one. I’d been using inflatable paddleboards for years—I’d leave them inflated for entire seasons, with my dog on top, in the water, under the sun, getting banged against rocks—and they were perfect year after year. While my backyard pool didn’t even last two summers, those boards withstood much harsher conditions without a single problem.
